Teena Marie, the "Ivory Queen of Soul" who developed a lasting legacy with her silky soul pipes and with hits like "Lovergirl," "Square Biz," and "Fire and Desire" with mentor Rick James, died on Sunday. She was 54. A statement from Pasadena police said the death appeared to be from natural causes. The police and fire department were called to her home after family members found her unresponsive. In an interview with The Associated Press last year, Teena Marie said she had successfully battled an addiction to prescription drugs; she went on tour last year to support her last album, Congo Square .Marie certainly wasn't the first white act to sing soul music, but she was arguably among the most gifted and respected, and was thoroughly embraced by the black audience.
Even before she started her musical career, she had a strong bond with the black community, which she credited to her godmother. She gravitated to soul music and in her youth decided to make it her career.
Marie made her debut on the legendary Motown label back in 1979, becoming one of the very few white acts to break the race barrier of the groundbreaking black-owned record label that had been a haven for black artists like Stevie Wonder, the Jackson Five, the Supremes and Marvin Gaye.
Marie was the protege of the masterful funk wizard James, with whom she would have long, turbulent but musically magical relationship. The cover of her debut album, Wild and Peaceful, did not feature her image, with Motown apparently fearing black audiences might not buy it if they found out the songstress with the dynamic, gospel-inflected voice was white.
But Marie notched her first hit, "I'm A Sucker for Your Love," and was on her way to becoming one of R&B's most revered queens. During her tenure with Motown, the singer-songwriter and musician produced passionate love songs and funk jam songs like "Need Your Lovin'," "Behind the Groove."
Marie's voice was the main draw of her music: Pitch-perfect, piercing in its clarity and wrought with emotion, whether it was drawing from the highs of romance or the mournful moments of a love lost. But her songs, most of which she had a hand in writing, were the other major component of her success.
Tunes like "Cassanova Brown" "Portuguese Love" and "Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)" featured more than typical platitudes on love and life, but complex thoughts with rich lyricism.
And "Fire and Desire," a duet with Rick James that featured the former couple musing about their past love, was considered a musical masterpiece and a staple of the romance block on radio stations across the country.
Marie left Motown in 1982 and her split became historic: She sued the label and the legal battle led to a law preventing record labels from holding an artist without releasing any of their music.
She went to Epic in the 1980s and had hits like "Lovergirl" and "Ooo La La La" but her lasting musical legacy would be her Motown years.
Still, she continued to record music and perform. In 2004 and 2006 she put out two well-received albums on the traditional rap label Cash Money Records, La Dona and Sapphire.
In 2008, she talked about her excitement at being honored by the R&B Foundation.
"All in all, it's been a wonderful, wonderful ride," she told The Associated Press at the time. "I don't plan on stopping anytime soon."

Red lipstick is high maintenance!, so make sure you color within the lines, of your lips of course. To get a super-precise line around your lips don’t apply straight from the tube. Instead, swipe a stiff lip brush across the top of your lipstick and carefully paint your lips. After applying, rim the outside border of your mouth with foundation to create a neat, and crisp line for a kissable pout.
Don't play up your eyes. "Pair red lipstick with the lightest possible eye makeup and blush."
Avoid getting lipstick on your teeth. After applying, put your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around it, then slowly pull it out to remove excess color. I know weird but it works. Lol!
The super-intense lipstick combo MAC artist Romero Jennings used for the Jason Wu show made me want to take a temporary hiatus from my usual nudes—it’s that gorgeous. First he applied a deep berry matte lipstick with a lip brush to create a base. Then he added a creamy eggplant shade on top, pressing it in with his fingers for a modern, stained effect. You can perfect the line with a lip brush (no liner needed). As for your eyes, keep them simple like Jennings did. Apply bronzy shadow and brown liner, then curl your lashes. So fresh!
Remix of the smoky eye. Just swap your charcoal shadow for the grown-up pastels makeup artist Dick Page used on models at Michael Kors. He lined their eyes with black pencil, then added gold shimmer in the inner corners. Next, he applied light blue or purple shadow along the lower curve of the eyes and from the lash line to just above the crease, then smudged, smudged, smudged. He finished with black mascara.
Here is a glimpse of the MAC Tartan Tale 2010 Collection. This collection launches in October. I love the plaid packaging. The brush collections ae always nice!

Question:Everytime I wear mascara, it always ends up on my upper eyelids and under my eyes too. How can I prevent this from happening?
Answer: First, try a mascara formula that is waterproof and or smudgeproof. Keep the application sheer and let it dry well after applying it. You may need to experiment with different brands and formulas as everyone's skin and chemistry will react differently to each product. Also, using a small wand (as opposed to a thick, chubby one) and applying the mascara while concentrating on the roots and not so much on ends will also help. As a bonus this will define your eyes while keeping the ends natural and feathery-looking.
There are certain times and places (weddings, the beach, a sudden emotional breakdown) when you just need waterproof mascara. The problem is, so many waterproof formulas can be drying or not waterproof enough. Here is a list of formulas that can get you through tear sessions, surf outings and more without a single smudge or flake. Find out which mascara will help you weather those soggy situations.

Clutch bags dominated the party bag scene, but at times it's best to go hands-free. When oversized is just too big, and when a pint-sized purse is way too small, one of these cross-body pocketbooks is just right. Go glam with a glitzy studded pick or swap out your everyday carryall for a leisurely leather strap purse.

With homemade glitter gloss you know that the ingredients are toxin free and cruelty free because you made it yourself. When you create your own glitter lip gloss, you are making a statement that you are someone who wants to look good and still cares about the environment. To start, you can use stuff you may have lying around the house or you can opt for a more natural gloss made with beeswax.

Tips & Warnings
If you use a recycled container for your glitter lip gloss, remove all traces of the original product. Clean and sterilize it either by boiling it or cleaning it out with rubbing alcohol. Think about going organic with the ingredients that you use for your lip gloss. Your health food store or an online herb shop will carry organic products for your lip gloss. The beeswax and shea butter gloss will have a firmer texture than the petroleum gloss.
Only use cosmetic grade beeswax. In fact, be sure that you only use cosmetic glitter and food grade products in your lip gloss.
I missed out on this fabulous lipstick and can't miss out on it again. This lipstick relaunches in the MAC Venomous Villians collection soon! Are you running out to get it!! :D
There are a handful of items that work brilliantly on everyone, and the pencil silhouette is one of them. The slim bottom, that usually hits just below the knee, brings out the curves even in shapeless figures. It's a timeless red carpet staple that time and again brings back the glamour of old Hollywood.
It seems backwards that MAC says pink is a warm color and yellow a cool, but they use the artists color wheel which is essentially backwards compared to what people normally think of as cool/warm. You can always think of NW as meaning 'not warm', or 'neutralizes warm' and NC as 'not cool' or 'neutralizes cool'.
MAC shades come in level 15 (extra pale) through level 55 (very dark). They make a variety of foundations with different finishes and consistencies to suit different skintypes. It is best to visit your local MAC counter to determine the shade you would wear with the assitsance of a MAC makeup artist. The vein trick written about on the chart is not always the most accurate way of determining your shade because some veins can appear different colors than others. It is best to try the foundation on your skin if you can do so.
It's here , easy-to-use squeeze tube the ultimate eye prep for smoother, more vibrant shadow and all-day wear, with absolutely NO creasing. The new needle-nose tip makes application precise, quick, and hygienic.

E! Online exclusively reveals that Kimora Lee Simmons is moving on from Baby Phat and Phat Fashions, the fashion house she launched 14 years ago…Kimora and Baby Phat's parent company, Kellwood Company, will go their separate ways as of Sept. 1. "After 14 years of conceiving and nurturing Baby Phat, it's time for me to move on and further expand my other businesses and create a new phenomenon," Simmons says. "I adore all those who have faithfully been with me since the beginning."
The 'undercut', which involves shearing away a section of hair while leaving the rest longer. Salons are now reporting an increase in the number of women asking to have their heads partially shaved.
At the Lisa Shepherd salon in London, staff say they are shearing the sides of around ten girls' heads every week - creating styles ranging 'from the subtle to the extreme'.
'It can be a very beautiful cut, if done well.' Will you be sporting an Undercut?
Choosing the right shade of concealer can be daunting. Do you go lighter or darker? What about those undereye circles or scars.
When choosing a concealer, you should consider both consistency and color. If you are covering major undereye circles, you're going to want a concealer that provides major coverage.
Yellow-toned products are your best bet for covering up undereye circles, according to makeup artist Bobbie Brown. Orange-based tones blend best into brown or dark skin. You want a shade or two lighter than your foundation (remember, your foundation should match your skin almost exactly).
Concealer is a definite "try before you buy" product. I don't recommend purchasing any product that's non-returnable. Instead, try out different concealers at department store counters or Sephora.
I'm still looking for that right shade of concealer. What about you?
